http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-AMC-AMX-3-OTO-MELARA-Mid-engine-Transaxle-Pantra-ZF-...

Here's what the e-Bay ad says from  luuuucky (347 )

Starting Bid $5,000
Up for auction is a NOS OTO MELARA 4 speed Transaxle especially designed and developed for American Motors for use in their AMX 3 project for 1970.

Number 26 of 31 made in Italy by renown military defense vehicle manufacturer Oto Melara, a subsidiary of Alpha Romeo.
Able to easily handle the 430 pounds of torque that the 1970 AMX 390 was producing in these mid engine super cars.
The ZF transaxle used by Ford in their Pantera was considered but was already known for being weak and was considered incapable of  handling the torque and horsepower of the AMX

The story goes that 30 units were originally planned in the AMX 3 project and there for 31 Transaxles commissioned by American Motors to be built.
When the plug was pulled on the project, after only producing 6 cars the remaining inventory of transaxles where shipped to American Motors design headquarters
in Detroit Michigan.

As time passed some of these transalxes, including this one found their way into the hands of hopeful super car builders.
At least one was used in a rear engine Hemi powered dragster in the Detroit area.
This unit was stored away in a heated shop for over 40 years without being used.
It has the following gear ratios: 2.27 / 1.6 / 1.2 / .8 with a final drive ratio of 3.45 and uses a single dry plate clutch.

Super strong transaxle without all the modifications a ZF requires for any super car, indy car or nostalgia dragster.

This unit will be available for inspection at Muscle car Corvette National this coming weekend November 23rd in Chicago Illinois.

Payment must be received within 5 days for the close of the auction and shipping costs are the sole responsibility of the buyer.

Because of the size, weight and value of this item there will be a $40 packaging fee and shipping insurance will be required if not picked up in person.

Best of luck and feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.

So, there are still some of these transaxles around, what do you think they are worth?
